The need for anti-natal care in rural areas cannot be overstated, particularly in Ghana and other African countries where maternal mortality rates remain alarmingly high. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2019, approximately 810 women died every day due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth, with 94% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries (WHO, 2020). In Ghana, the maternal mortality ratio stands at 308 deaths per 100,000 live births, with rural areas bearing the brunt of these statistics (Ghana Health Service, 2020). The lack of access to quality anti-natal care, skilled birth attendants, and emergency obstetric services in rural areas exacerbates this issue. Furthermore, cultural and socio-economic barriers often hinder women's ability to seek timely medical care, leading to devastating consequences. As emphasized by the WHO, strengthening health systems, improving access to anti-natal care, and promoting skilled birth attendance are critical to reducing maternal mortality and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (WHO, 2019). Therefore, it is imperative that Ghana and other countries prioritize the provision of quality anti-natal care services in rural areas, leveraging community-based initiatives, mobile health services, and collaborative efforts with traditional birth attendants to bridge the gap in maternal healthcare and save lives.
the visionary CEO of ASH 24 Services Enterprise. Today, we celebrate her commitment to empowering women and communities. In partnership with The Literate Ummah Initiative International, Ayishatu has generously offered her expertise to equip women, particularly mothers in petty trading, with the valuable skill of soap making.
Through this transformative year-long initiative, beginning in 2025, Ayishatu will help bridge the skills gap in highly deprived areas across Africa, reaching both urban and rural communities. Her dedication to economic empowerment and women's development is truly inspiring.
Please join us in welcoming Ayishatu Sulleiman, a champion of women's empowerment and community growth."
